This section list the requirements for Linux. When choosing a linux distribution, you will want to make sure that the machine(s) you will install to all meet the requirements. Below is a summary of requirements for the most popular distributions:
Fedora Core 3
Processor (CPU)
Minimum: Pentium-class
Fedora Core 3 is optimized for Pentium 4 CPUs, but also supports earlier CPUs (such as Pentium, Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Pentium III, and including AMD and VIA variants). This approach has been taken because Pentium-class optimizations actually result in reduced performance for non-Pentium-class processors, and Pentium 4 scheduling is sufficiently different (while making up the bulk of today's processors) to warrant this change.
- Recommended for text-mode: 200 MHz Pentium-class or better
- Recommended for graphical: 400 MHz Pentium II or better
Hard Disk Space
- Custom Installation (Minimal): 620MB
- Server: 1.1GB
- Personal Desktop: 2.3GB
- Workstation: 3.0GB
- Custom Installation (Everything): 6.9GB
Memory Requirements
- Minimum for text-mode: 64MB
- Minimum for graphical: 192MB
- Recommended for graphical: 256MB
Debian 3.0 (Woody)
Processor (CPU)
Multi-processor support — also called ``symmetric multi-processing'' or SMP — is supported for this architecture. However, the standard Debian 3.0 kernel image does not support SMP. This should not prevent installation, since the standard, non-SMP kernel should boot on SMP systems; the kernel will simply use the first CPU.
The following processors are supported:
- Alpha
- ARM
- HP PA-RISC
- Intel x86
- Intel IA-64
- Motorola 680x0 (atari, amiga, mac)
- MIPS
- MIPS (DEC)
- PowerPC (powermac, new-powermac)
- IBM S/390
- SPARC
Memory Requirements
- 12MB of memory
Hard Disk Space
- 110MB of hard disk space
Suse Linux 9.0
SUSE LINUX supports most PC hardware components. The following requirements should be met to ensure smooth operation of SUSE LINUX:
Processor (CPU)
The following processors are supported:
- Pentium® 1-4
- AMD® Duron, Athlon™, Athlon XP, Athlon MP or Athlon 64
- Intel® Celeron or EM64T
Memory Requirements
- At least 128 MB; 256 MB recommended
Hard Disk Space
- At least 500 MB; 2.5 GB recommended for standard system
Slackware 10.0
Processor (CPU)
The following processors are supported:
- Pentium® 1-4
- AMD® Duron, Athlon™, Athlon XP, Athlon MP or Athlon 64
- Intel® Celeron or EM64T
Memory Requirements
- At least 16 MB
Hard Disk Space
The disk space requirement is somewhat tricky. The 500MB recommendation is usually safe, but if you do a full install, you will need around one gigabyte of available hard disk space. Most users don't do a full install. In fact, many run Slackware on as little as 100MB of hard disk space.
- 500 MB
